All patients who have received a Total Joint Replacement and who will undergo dental work on gums and/or roots should adhere to the following antibiotic regimen:
Patients not allergic to penicillin Cephalexin, Cephradine or Amoxicillin: 2 grams orally 1 hour prior to the dental procedure
Patients allergic to penicillin Clindamycin: 600 mg orally 1 hour prior to the dental procedure
Patients should adhere to this regiment for the first two years following joint replacement.
Immunocompromised patients, including those with inflammatory arthropathies, rheumatoid arthritis, disease, drug or radiation-induced immunosuppression, insulin-dependent diabetes or any other major medical problem should ALWAYS follow this antibiotic routine. The risk of infection is hereby reduced but cannot be completely eliminated.
